Cognitive Dysfunction Cognitive dysfunction is defined as: a medical condition associated with a dog's cognitive function which cannot be caused by an underlying condition such as cancer, organ failure, or an infection. It is the result of physical and chemical changes in the dog's brain that affect the brain's function This is a part of aging but rather a problem that can be controlled. Unfortunately, there is no cure. The possible signs of cognitive dysfunction include (but are not limited to): doesn't recognize owner, gets confused, barks at night for no reason, doesn't run to greet you, run away when petted, and messes in the house. Since some of these can be indiative of other problem, if you notice any of these signs, it's best to make an appointment with your vet for an exam. This problem can affect cats, too. |
